I am that rare thing, a native Californian. I was born in 1950 in downtown Los Angeles in Queens of Angels Hospital. My father was the first member of the family to be born in American and I was the first one to be born in California. When I was seven years old my family moved to Westminster in Orange County, California. On one side of the road was the brand new house my parents bought; on the other side was a cattle ranch.
When I was 11 years old, my after school job was to throw flecks of hay to the horses and mules at Mr. Hefley’s boarding stable on my way home from school. The way I got paid was I could ride the horses and mules all I wanted on weekends. I was very hurt when little girlfriend did not love me anymore when I got tired of working for free and she could no longer ride horses for free.
When the freeways were being built I would ride my bicycle down the empty slab of I-405 to the Santa Ana Airport and ride around the airplanes. There were some old airplanes we could take pieces off of. I got a gauge from an old Comet jet fighter and some wire from my Dad’s garage and that was how I knew I was riding my bike at 10, 000 feet.
I would ride my bike with no hands, unzip my jacket and hold it out like a sail and the Santana wind would drive me at jet rocket ship speed.
Change does not happen in one discrete geographic location and history is a chain of events that has brought us to where we are today. Orange County can be taken as a microcosm for California and California as a microcosm for America.
My mother taught me that in all things we must “take the bitter with the better.” That is the story I wish to tell. The better and the bitter sides of the history of Orange County, California. Here in Orange County we don’t retire. We just find another way of working.
